Talking Penguins

A 3D landscape collage made with magazine clippings shows two Royal Penguins facing each other with speech bubbles that say "....." and ".....". In the foreground, a King Penguin faces the viewer. The penguins are joined on the beach by two tan women with long, dark hair wearing bathing suits and sitting in the sand with their beach towels. Another girl is running toward the water. There are dozens of other people on the beach, but none close to this exchange. The sun is setting and outdoor lights illuminate the buildings at the edge of the beach.

How To Do It

  • Together, use your imaginations to create an original story based on this picture.
  • Write down your ideas in response to the questions below.
  • Give the story a title and read aloud with emotions the story you just created.
  • The last question asks you to connect the picture to your own stories.

  1. What do you think is happening here?
  2. Where would you say this is taking place? Describe the beach and figures in the picture.
  3. What sounds and smells could be found there?
  4. What might the penguins think of the people on the beach?
  5. If the penguins could talk, what do you think they would be saying to one another?
  6. What do you think might happen next?
  7. Share stories about your favorite vacations or trips to the beach.
